PROVIDER PERSPECTIVE:

There are obviously patients we're not going to love, per se, but (what) if psychologically we as providers act like that person (is part of our family)? For instance, very often, especially... the patient will ask me "what would you do if I were your father?" Well, this patient may be someone I just met so I don't have the type of relationship with them to treat them like they were my father or my grandfather. But (if we try) to transcend that particular relationship and act like (the patient is a family member), and respond like that is the case, I think that can help us resolve some of the conflict. We don't love every patient we come in contact with nor are we going to love every patient that we come in contact with. But perhaps our behavior will allow us to transcend that emotional feeling, and still accomplish what needs to be done. (We can then) treat those patients in a quality manner; thereby a manner they perceive as compassionate.
